Abstract:
Political knowledge, trust, and participation, collectively known as political engagement, are essential in a democracy. Guided by Lin’s Network Theory of Social Capital, this thesis examines how individuals, termed as egos in social network research, develop and harness their political communication networks for political engagement. Survey data was collected from a sample of 400 Filipino youth (15-24 years old) living in Metro Manila. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses derived from the propositions of Lin’s theory, which specified the relationships among individual, civic, and network characteristics, on the one hand, and political engagement, on the other. Based on its findings, the study concludes that a) individual and civic characteristics impact the quality of individuals’ political communication network, b) network characteristics determine the level of political engagement manifested by individuals, and c) networks mediate the effects of the individuals’ position in society on their political engagement. The results further suggest that although the Filipino youth are in a good position to access and mobilize politically relevant social capital, they exhibit low political engagement, which may be partly due to their lack of communication with others. Courses of action for pro-democracy stakeholders are recommended.
ABSTRACT<br />
The issue of persons with disabilities (PWDs) goes beyond their physical limitation. It is the social and environmental factors that disable an individual and hinder one from fully participating in the society. In 2006, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) called for the proper portrayal of PWDs in media. However, stereotypes and misrepresentation still exist in the media today. To examine the current coverage of PWDs in the Philippines, this thesis looked at the articles published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Philippine Star, two of the leading newspapers in the country. Using the Agenda-Setting Theory, Framing Theory of Media, and the Social Model of Disability, the researchers assessed how media outfits affect the coverage and representation of PWDs. <br />
While the content analysis results revealed that coverage of the two newspapers take on the human-rights perspective in the coverage, leaders of various PWD organizations noted that there is still a great need to improve it. Traditional perspectives in viewing PWD issues are still used in the print media, such as medical and charity perspective.
</div>UP Kustura is a socio-cultural organization comprising of college students from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, residing in the City of Marikina. It was founded with the aims of binding, consolidating UP students, who are living in Marikina and of Marikeno lineage, promoting academic and leadership excellence, and advancing the social, cultural, economic and political consciousness of the people of Marikina.

UP Kustura commits itself to serve the university and the community as a whole through projects and programs that will help preserve and build the pride and dignity of the City of Marikina.
History
The concept of founding UP Kustura is rooted on the inspiration of having a recognized geographic-based or ethnicity-based UP student organization for those who are from the National Capital Region, particularly, those who live in Marikina City and/or those who has Marikeño lineage.

It all started in early 2001 when a small group of students from different colleges in Diliman engaged on the idea of forming a provincial/regional org that would represent the National Capital Region. But since all of them are from Marikina City and they thought that it would require a bigger effort for them to consolidate Metro Manileño/as in the campus, they decided to form a city-org instead, thus giving birth to UP Kustura, a Marikeño Student Organization, the first and only Metro Manila-based city student organization in UP Diliman.

On the 7th day of July, the organization’s constitution (which was written in Filipino) was formally certified by more or less twenty five (25) undergraduate students enrolled in the different colleges of the university. This has also become the organization’s official founding date. In the same year, the founding members were also able to work on the recognition of the org by the university’s Office of Student Affairs as a university-wide city-based student association in UP Diliman.

Since its founding year, UP Kustura continues to commit itself to the ideals of service and excellence while promoting Marikina’s culture and pride, both in the university and in the city it represents.

UP Kustura is a socio-cultural organization comprising of college students from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, residing in the City of Marikina.
