==History==
It was in 1915, eight years after the establishment of the University of the Philippines in 1908, when the Department of Political Science was established as a unit of the College of Liberal Arts. The first head f the unit, then called "chief of the Department," was George A. Malcolm. He headed the Department while he was concurrently Dean of the College of Law from 1915-1920. His successor as Chief of the Department was Maximo M. Kalaw, the first Filipino head of the Department. Kalaw headed the Department from 1920-1934.

The Department greatly influenced the development of the discipline in our country. Malcolm's Government of the Philippine Islands and his collaborative work with Kalaw, Philippine Government, firmly established the legalistic and institutional approaches of the discipline in our country.

These dominant approaches had been strongly challenged in the Department in the 1960s, and has now been replaced with orientations in political sociology and political economy. These have become the dominant perspectives in the Department. The Department has continued to influence the discipline in our country in spite of institutional reorganizations of the College of Liberal Arts. In the 1950s, the College was reorganized into a College of Arts and Sciences, which was divided into three Colleges in 1983 - College of Arts and Letters, College of Science, and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. The Department of Political Science is now one of the seven departments in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
The Department of Political Science seeks to achieve the following objectives: maintain and upgrade curricular programs -- B.A. Political Science, BA-MA Honors Program, M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science and the Master in International Studies (MIS) Program--; promote faculty development and welfare; and upgrade office infrastructures.

The undergraduate program (B.A. Political Science) is designed to develop expertise in political science primarily through the provision of instruction and research guidance to undergraduate students. This program has been the major baccalaureate offering of the Department. Curricular offerings are revised when the need arises, to keep it up to date with developments in the discipline. The program in place now was the result of the revisions made in 1987, 1990 and latest round of curricular changes approved on March 15, 1995 (fully implemented and made effective for incoming freshmen during the school year 1995-1996).
__TOC__

== History ==

The College of Home Economics (CHE) at the University of the Philippines was established by the Board of Regents on July 27, 1961. It emanated from the Department of Home Economics in the College of Education where the discipline was first officially recognized on November 12, 1921, forty years before the College was established.

In its beginning years, CHE offered two undergraduate degree programs: BS in Food Technology (BSFT) and BS in Home Economics (BSHE), major in any of the following fields: Nutrition and Dietetics; Home Arts, Clothing, Textiles and Related Arts; Family Life and Child Development; Clothing, Home Funishing and Crafts Merchandising. The graduate programs which started with the university's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences were transferred to CHE's administration: Master of Home Economics (MHE), Master of Arts in Home Economics (MAHE), and Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition (MSFN).

As the College stepped on its 40th year, it was administering 17 curricular programs: seven undergraduate and ten graduate. With the multiplication and diversification of its curricular offerings, a systematic and substantial disciplinal identity development and curricular review was undertaken by the faculty. For the very first timein the College history, the discipline of Home Economics was defined by the faculty in their own terms (1990) and the Educative Goals of the College articulated (1992). Three common courses were instituted to better address CHE's educative goals and to provide a venue for exchange of ideas among CHE students across sub-disciplines.

To enhance its thrust, the Filipino Family and the Nation series was organized in 1991, numerous public fora on issues affecting Filipino families were conducted from 1992 onwards and the Family Studies Program was established in 1994 as was the Food Safety Project and CHE-Libis Pahinungod in 1995.

==History==

The history of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), University of the Philippines (UP), dates back to the year 1910 although its name was given only in 1983. CSSP began as part of the College of Liberal Arts which was established on June 1910 by virtue of a decision of the UP Board of Regents. The college previously existed as an institution called Junior College of Liberal Arts operated by the Bureau of Education of the Department of Public Instruction. At first it was named the College of Philosophy, Science and Letters before it was changed to the College of Liberal Arts on 30 January 1911. The college had two units-- the Junior College which offered two years of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts; and the Senior College which offered three years of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts. The coursework in the Junior College was such as to prepare the students who wished to enroll in professional course.

Before the start of the first semester of the academic year 1959-1960, the College of Liberal Arts was reorganized into three academic units -the University College, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. All three units, however, were served by only one faculty

The College of Liberal Arts was reorganized in order to solve the problem that may result with the implementation of the basic education program. The University College started its operations during the first semester of 1959-1960. It was given the task of teaching the general education courses, including the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, for the first two years. To strengthen the foundation of a liberal education, the college was expected to continue the general education, as well as to correct some aspects taught in high school.

Meanwhile the third and subsequent years of college studies were handled by the College of Arts and Sciences which was mandated to continue offering undergraduate courses in the humanities, social scien-ces, natural and physical sciences, mathematics and languages. These disciplines were offered by the college as fields of specialization. As such, the third and subsequent years of college studies of a student were focused on one discipline for in-depth study, aside from other related disciplines, called free electives, which he may rake.

The different roles played by the University College and the College of Arts and Sciences necessitated separate administrations. To avoid the overlapping of roles of the two colleges and to integrate the various disciplines, three major divisions were formed to take the place of the academic departments -- the Division of Humanities, Division of Social Sciences, arid the Division of Natural Sciences. The traditional academic disciplines operated under their respective divisions without any departmental head

On 26 October 1983, the UP Board of Regents issued Administrative Order No.170 creating three new colleges from the former College of Arts and Sciences - the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), ripe College of Arts and Letters (CAL), and the College of Science (CS).

Dr Francisco Nemenzo (1976-1981) of the Department of Political Science was the Dean of the CAS before it was split into three colleges. Prof Ofelia Angangco (1981-1983) from the Department of Sociology was the Dean of CSSP when it was split into three colleges. She was succeeded bv Dr Leslie Bauzon (1983-1989) from the Department of History who served as the first Dean of the CSSP In 1989, Dr Zeus A. Salazar (1989-1992) was sworn in as new dean.

The social sciences and philosophy are the foundation of a relevant university education. Students are encouraged to respond to the need for critical thought and inquiry, as well as to disseminate and refine the standards of values which they so constantly apply in daily living. The college, with the help and guidance of highly competent faculty and staff shares the vision of molding students to "search further into the depths of knowledge and to pursue truth."

The CSSP located at the Palma Hall, is composed of the following departments: Anthropology, Geography History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Population Institute. The Third World Studies Program and the Folklore and Philippine Studies Program are also housed under the CSSP which also takes charge of the administration of Diliman Review, a quarterly publication-for the stu-dents of the three colleges.

==Overview==

The UP Samahan sa Agham Pampulitika (UP SAPUL), formerly known as UP Political Science Club, is an academic, student-based, non-partisan, and socio-political organization aimed at advancing Political Science as a discipline and field of study. It is a university-wide organization in the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus and is thus open to all students interested in political science. Its maxim, “Tungo sa Pinakamataas na Antas ng Paglilingkod”, speaks of the service-oriented and socially-conscious character of the organization.

==History==

When UP Samahan sa Agham Pampulitika was founded in 1930, it first took the name “Political Science Club” with the objective of further studying and analyzing the then timely issues that occurred, thus focusing on a more academic orientation. And due to this reason, only students of Political Science were allowed to join the said organization. But as time brought challenges, the organization also began to adapt to the changes.
In the 1960s, the strong sense of nationalism that prevailed in the country became the organization’s guiding principle. Its ideology was drawn along the lines of national democracy. Hence, during the time of Martial Law, UP SAPUL did not allow that this military rule hinder their right to organization. With nineteen other organizations, they fearlessly fought for freedom. After the Filipino people emerged triumphant over the dictatorial regime, TANGLAW, the newsletter of UP SAPUL, was the first to be published in the university preceding even the Collegian. This, however, is not the only instance that UP SAPUL rode with the tides of change.

And with the organization’s renaming from Political Science Club to Samahan sa Agham Pampulitika, that it is now known as, it has become not only academically-oriented but socio-political as well. Since then, it has also accepted members from a wide array of colleges and degree programs. Nevertheless, the principles behind SAPUL – pluralism, critical thinking, duality of theory and practice, enlightened activism and academic excellence- remain steadfast.
Indeed, for almost 80 years and counting, UP SAPUL has aimed not only to be a successful academic formation but more importantly, a true serving institution in our society.

==Alumni==

Notable alumni of the UP PSC/SAPUL include Enrique Voltaire Garcia II, Jose Maria Sison, Teodoro Agoncillo, Renato Constantino, Franklin Drilon, Temario Rivera, Gregorio Zaide, Marcelo Fernan, Nurullaji Misuari y Tining or Nur Misuari. Among UP professors, included in the list are Malaya Ronas, Maria Ela Atienza, Atty. Butch Jamon, Grace Jamon, Celito Arlegue, Verna Dinah Viajar, Jorge Tigno and even former UP President Francisco Nemenzo and current Political Science Department Chair Maria Lourdes Rebullida.
==Logo==

The logo is comprised of the torch, the anvil & hammer, and the chain. The torch symbolizes the blazing ideals and aspirations of the organization guiding the formation of a new and progressive attitude forged by the anvil and hammer. The chain represents the formidable linkage of theory and practice.
