This descriptive study investigated the role and contribution of media in the formation of road safety practices in relation to the awareness, knowledge, attitudes and behavior of Metro Manila youth drivers. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed in order to validate findings. All respondents and informants were purposively selected Metro Manila youth drivers from the University of the Philippines, Diliman; Ateneo De Manila University and De La Salle University, Manila.

The study found that Metro Manila youth drivers were highly aware of road safety practices, but not necessarily completely knowledgeable. It was similarly revealed they had positive road safety attitudes and practices. Moreover, attitudes on road safety were found to be weak determinants of road safety practices.

The results of the study indicated that the media, although deemed by Metro Manila youth drivers as significant, were perceived to have more of a supporting role in the formation of road safety practices in relation to their awareness, knowledge, attitudes and behavior. This study found that the media were utilized at the level of increasing the awareness and knowledge of Metro Manila youth drivers, more than changing their attitudes and practices.
This study examines how Willie Revillame, host of the popular noontime variety show, Wowowee, has assumed the political role of Ideological State Apparatus by propagating dominant ideologies in his conversations with the show’s studio participants. A line from the show’s opening theme, “Wowowee, sinong ‘di mawiwili?” (“Wowowee, who won’t get carried away?”) captures the phenomenon of Ideological State Apparatuses (ISA) like the mass media, which embed ways of thinking to perpetuate the status quo. On the individual level, a leader could maintain his hold on power by boosting his Moral Capital. One way to do this is by proclaiming an ideology that is appealing to his followers, albeit different from his real stand.

Hence, Conversation Analysis, Document Analysis, and Critical Discourse Analysis were conducted to understand the ideological subtext of the conversations between Willie and the studio participants, as well as to correlate the former’s personal and on-show ideologies. The conversations reveal a distinct power relation in favor of Willie, as well as a disparity between the egalitarian “beliefs” and the non-developmental ideologies interpreted from his statements. Furthermore, the studio participants have been shown to consensually accept Willie’s ideologies. Thus, Willie not only mirrors society’s dominant ideologies, but further strengthens them.

Spotlight: Teen Magazine's Cover Celebrities and their Effects on the Lifestyle of High School Students

Abstract:

This thesis examines the effects of cover celebrity features of teen magazines on the lifestyle of female high school readers.

A content analysis of the cover photos and cover features of the 2008 issues of ''Meg'' and ''Candy'' magazines, combined with surveys and interviews, are the methods used to identify how teen readers are affected by articles about their favorite artists.

Most female teenagers depend on teen magazines to satisfy their needs. These are the needs for safety, esteem love, and belongingness. Teen magazines are their main source of information that helps them cope with the transformations that is part of their adolescent life. Moreover, teen magazines serve as a tool for teenagers to bond with each other. Issues about their favorite celebrities are one of their favorite bonding topics. It is interesting to note that the respondents, though united in their admiration of cover celebrities, appeared to be critical in processing the information that is fed to them by magazines.

They identified glitches in the presentation of cover celebrities such as edited pictures and extremely positive articles. Moreover, they conferred that despite their adoration of celebrities, and the strong temptation to imitate seemingly perfect women, they are very much in control of their own choice, and their own lives.

ABSTRACT Madrileño, L.A. (2010). The Deal with Dengue: A Comparative Study on the Coverage of Broadsheets, Tabloids and News Websites of Dengue Fever and Public Perception of the Disease, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

The study focuses on the coverage of dengue fever done by broadsheets, tabloids and news websites. It made an attempt to distinguish each medium from the other via content analysis of articles. The study also took note of public perception of the disease. This is done through survey of 100 college students in Metro Manila. The respondents were asked basic facts about dengue and their response after being exposed to information about the disease. The gatekeeping and framing theories, provides the framework for the analysis on how editorial decisions are made in the newsroom. To acquire the information from the inside, an interview with the news editor of the Philippine Daily Inquirer was conducted. The analysis revealed that nothing much differs in terms of coverage. The characteristics and limitations of each genre greatly affect the way it covers dengue. The public is basically well-informed of dengue but it does not do much action on the information they know. Also, it revealed that people tune more to broadcast medium as a source of information. The researcher recommends a wider analysis of other broadsheets, tabloids and news websites so as to really understand the formation of news in these media. Also, inclusion of the broadcast media, namely TV and radio, can give more depth.

'''Abstract'''<br />
Prensky’s (2001a) “digital natives” refer to children born in the age of technology. To explore this phenomenon in the Philippine setting, the researchers aim to determine the contexts in which Metro Manilan tweens develop the use of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) and how this development integrates in their characteristics, literacy and lifestyle.

Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed. The survey was administered to a total of 305 respondents, who came from four randomly selected Metro Manila schools. They were also the subjects of observation.

Results showed that Metro Manilan tweens qualify as digital natives. High awareness on and usage of ICTs were recorded. Half of them have computers at home, while three-fourths own mobile phones. At a young age, they are already knowledgeable about computer- and mobile phone-based technologies, such as video games, call and text, social networks and chat. Their motivations and gratifications obtained, communication activities and social environment were also discussed. Based on observation, they exhibited assertiveness and fast-paced lifestyle, among others.

Findings of this study have significant implications primarily on the Philippine education sector and proper parental monitoring, as policies and practice must be evidence-based and empirically informed.

ABSTRACT

This investigative thesis studied and analyzed the motivations behind the construction of the Metro Manila Development Authority‟s (MMDA) Pink Fences. The road structure – 6-foot pink wire mesh fences – emerged during Bayani Fernando‟s term as MMDA chairperson in response to the disorderly traffic situation in Metro Manila. Guided by the assumptions of Rational Choice Theory, Public Choice Theory and Biopolitics, this study explored the background and motivations that sparked the project and analyzed the involvement of public officials in its construction and implementation. In order to accomplish the study‟s objectives, the researchers followed the investigative “people trail” and “paper trail” by conducting focus interviews and archival research and employing textual analysis to analyze relevant data. The investigation showed that (1) the process undergone for the procurement of the project‟s materials was flawed and not uniform; (2) the pink fences, and other MMDA projects, were used by the administration party to advance its own interests; and (3) the construction of the pink fences served private interests and favored companies to a point of disadvantage to the government and disservice to public interest.
This study determines the role of television advertisements in reinforcing the social values of elementary students from two schools in Valenzuela City. Using Klapper’s reinforcement theory and Hall’s encoding/decoding model of communication, this study tries to prove that advertising does not act alone in creating consumer values but rather reinforces the social values already projected by other social institutions as important. The study utilizes semiotic analysis to decipher the values emphasized in the advertisement series of Nestle Sorbetes and Coca-Cola Litro. Then, four set of focus group discussions are conducted among the students and faculty members of Maysan Elementary School and St. Joseph Academy of Valenzuela to gather the social values they teach and learn from the said academic institution. The values from the advertisements series and the four focus group discussions are compared to find similarities that would enable values reinforcement.

The study found out that there are no similarities with the values taught in school and values emphasized in the two given advertisement series. The two schools show focus on the values of discipline and righteousness while the advertisements give more emphasize to nationalism, generosity and religiosity.

ABSTRACT

This thesis investigates the supervision of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), a national youth organization of 300,000 officials with P4.8 billion fund at their disposal annually. Through analyses of pertinent documents and series of focus interviews of officials from local SK’s and national agencies such as the SK National Federation (SKNF) , National Youth Commission and Department of Interior and Local Governance, this research explains how the SK and its funds are not properly supervised and evaluated. The researchers discovered that there is no proper delineation of tasks among the SK’s supervising agencies: the NYC, which is supposed to monitor the SKNF, wants to tighten its hold over the SK, the DILG, tasked to oversee the local SK’s, is not aware of its functions, and the SKNF insists on its autonomy both on the national and local levels. This research explains how these unclear job distinctions result to improper monitoring of the SK through their financial and accomplishment reports. The lack of monitoring, in turn, breeds dishonest practices, such as corruption and bribery, among the ranks of these youth leaders. In line with these problems hounding the SK 18 years after it was established, this thesis also discusses various bills aiming to either improve the operation and structure of the SK, or totally abolish it. And while these bills are still not properly consolidated, monitoring of the SK’s performance remains insufficient, evaluation of their programs deficient, and billions of their allotted fund unaccounted.

This study examines the factors of competence of Filipino sportscasters. These factors were defined as “image and performance” which are components derived from the study of Gotinga and Ignacio about newscasters in 2005. Image is defined as the sportscaster’s on screen persona, which pertain to physical appearance and on-screen reputation. Physical appearance is further defined as neatness, youthfulness, and good looks. On-screen reputation refers to credibility, humility, rapport with staff, compassion and personality. Performance refers to a sportscaster’s on-air delivery and sports knowledge. To gain an objective understanding of a competent Filipino sportscaster, data was gathered from three perspectives – the networks, the sportscasters, and the sports audience. The responses from the three units of analysis were subdivided to the roles of a sportscaster – as a sports analyst, a sports anchor, and a courtside reporter. The findings showed that the overarching characteristic of competence as a sportscaster is sports knowledge. The ability to communicate effectively, to ad lib, to be flexible, to be witty, to be trustworthy, to be credible, to have rapport, to be humble and to be neat are characteristics that then are valued for competence. Youthfulness and good looks are bonuses for panelists but requisites for courtside reporters.

ABSTRACT

This study tried to determine the political and economic considerations in the
process of gatekeeping in the production of TEN (The Evening News). It aimed to
understand the practices and motivations involved in the regulation of information in the
production of the program. The Gatekeeping Theory of Pamela Shoemaker was used as
a guide and lens in understanding the production process of TEN through the four levels
of gatekeeping analysis. On the other hand, Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman’s
Propaganda Model was used as a lens in examining the three filters that influence the
news coverage and overall content of the program. The researcher used participant
observation and focused interviews as methods to gather data. She utilized maximum
variation sampling in her nine-day observation period in the news department of TV5,
and used purposive sampling for the focused interviews of some of the key players in
the production of TEN.

The researcher found out that the production of TEN starts when an event or
issue is identified as newsworthy by the desk supervisors. The newsworthiness of a
story depends on its relevance to the public, timeliness, or its human interest factor.
Since the employees of the news department of TV5 are divided into three clusters—
political, defense/security, and economy—there are different considerations, sources,
Advertisers do not impose direct influences on the content of the program. In the
first place, TEN does not have so many advertisers. However, the quest for advertisers
causes the program’s executives to come up with ways to attract more viewers. They
provide the audiences interesting news stories and segments, and give them
opportunities to express their opinions and comments on certain issues.

The researcher concluded that the political and economic considerations in the
gatekeeping process of TEN are interrelated. The concentration of news coverage to the
politically and economically affluent sources, careful angling and treatment on news that
involve persons or institutions affiliated to the station and its owner, and the efforts to
increase viewership through its unique format are steps towards achieving one goal—
greater profits to keep the program on-air.

The researcher recommends that studies on the TEN’s text should be conducted
in order to determine the dominant ideologies that it propagates to the audiences. A
comparative study on the previous and succeeding news programs of TV5 is also
recommended to learn the differences of the programs in terms of content, format, and
quality.
This dissertation examines the impact of mobile Internet on the future of the corporate information technology landscape in Quezon City for the next ten years. This was guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Van Dijk’s Four Stages of Digital Access. By examining the existing mobile internet infrastructures, systems and mobile internet devices in corporate offices based in Quezon City and the plans for the development of this technology, the study was able to discover the accessibility, usage and availability of these devices to office employees and how these have affected their work efficiency, communication and work practices. The study employed two major methodologies 1) a survey of the corporate offices in Quezon City with a total of 101 respondents and 2) key informant interviews with 5 experts on the field of ICT and mobile Internet devices. Results of the survey point to mobile Internet devices having impact and improving communication efficiency, information dissemination, decision-making procedures, and productivity in terms of maximized work input, workplace organization and tidiness and cost effectiveness in their offices. The interviews, on the other hand, revealed the mobile Internet’s effect on the work styles of employees by providing them with portability of work space, ease of access to information, more flexible work times, an option to work at home which affected efficiency and balance between work and personal lives of corporate office workers in Quezon City. Interviews with personnel from the QC ICT Council revealed the plans of Quezon City to become an ICT hub of the country by making its environment conducive for ICT based industries.

ABSTRACT <br />

This study explores how accessing Social Networking Sites (SNS) influence work behavior and work productivity. Literature has shown that using SNS and other forms of social media while at the workplace affected work productivity. The researchers wished to find out the reasons why it is accessed while at work and what positive effects it brings in the work setting. Thus, a series of focus interviews on employees and HR personnel were done. An online survey was also conducted to further strengthen the qualitative data. Findings show that accessing such sites during working hours helped employee respondents and informants get diversion and relief from the stress they experience in work. It also allowed them to stay connected and updated with their social network even during working hours. For some employees, the use of accessing SNS at the workplace also helped in the accomplishment of their work-related tasks as it allows for real-time communication with co-workers and also serves as a venue for information-seeking. Even so, HR personnel maintain conservative views on SNS use during work hours. On a positive note, SNS helped in facilitating a more comfortable face-to-face communication between an employee respondents/informant and her/his work colleagues.

ABSTRACT

This phenomenological study aims to determine how endorsing products affects the credibility of the newscaster and if the newscaster’s credibility is also commodified in doing these endorsements. In the study, the Source Credibility theory was utilized in determining the credibility of the newscasters’ image. The theory of Political Economy was also used in order to determine whether the newscaster’s credibility was commodified in doing product endorsements. A survey was conducted among participants from three sectors: the students, the middle class, and the masa or the lower economic strata to be able to show the different points of view of the audience. In-depth interviews with experts from the television and advertising industries were also conducted to determine the ethical issues and motives involved in the product endorsement of newscasters.
The results show that the audience has a positive reaction to seeing newscasters doing product endorsements and they still perceived them as credible. It can be concluded that these commercials are indeed advantageous to the credibility of the newscaster.

However, with regard to the effectivity of the newscaster as an endorser, the results show that even if the respondents find the newscaster credible, it does not affect their decision to purchase the product. Instead, the respondents would primarily consider the quality of the product itself.
The major implication of the study is that the network itself still considers the phenomenon of newscasters doing commercials as an unresolved issue and that a better standard of ethical practice should be established within the institution itself.

Recommendations for the study would be to conduct more interviews of newscasters to be able to gather sufficient data to further support the findings of the study that advertisers do have undue influence on the newscast. A study focused on the networks that allow newscasters to do product endorsements and their motives in doing so can also be done. This can help determine if the phenomenon of newscasters doing product endorsements will still persist in the future.

ABSTRACT

This thesis reconstructs the story of animé in the Philippines from the time of its
arrival until to its current situation in the Philippine television landscape, with focus given
on the Animé Boom period of 1999 to 2001. Using the framework of John Mittell‟s Genre
Theory, the creation of the programming of animé shows in the Philippines is determined
in relation to both macro (political-economic conditions) and micro (television network‟s
programming strategy) factors that occurred in the Philippines during the period of study.
To recreate the animé‟s narrative, this paper analyzes newspaper and magazine articles
published from 1999 to 2007. The study also uses a focus interview of a GMA 7 program
specialist, in addition to analyses of ratings of animé shows from 1998 to 2003. The
findings show that the programming of animé genre in the country is indeed a result of
both macro and micro factors. Macro in the sense that it was Martial Law of 1970s that
caused animés to be banned on television; and then it was politics once again that
revived the audience‟s interest on this genre through the House Bill 6622. On the other
hand, there is the micro factor of the network‟s programming strategies, wherein both the
advertisers and the audience affected the fate of animés.

The unique story created by animé in the Philippine setting proves Mittell‟s arguments
that genres should be defined by not only considering television industry practices but
the historical situation as well. And with that, this paper presents the boom of the animé
genre to find its position in the country‟s broadcasting historical landscape.
It analyzed 100 undergraduate theses from 2005-2009 of the Broadcast Communication, Communication Research, and Journalism departments of UP CMC. Further, 12 best theses from 2005-2008 were also purposively selected to add substantial data to the study. The study utilized the theories of Constructivism by Jesse Delia and Hermeneutics by Paul Ricoeur. The study found out that most of the theses are concentrated under the Media Content, Communication, Media and Development Agenda of the College. It was also observed that the reasons for pursuing the research topics were not to deliberately uphold the vision and goals of the College, but were in accord with the College’s vision and goals.

This study looked into how the humor in the “Ang Spoiled” segment in the comedy program Bubble Gang reflects Filipino Values. The method that was employed to gather the data was narrative semiotics which analyzed the narrative structure and the deep structure or underlying meaning of 20 episodes of the segment. Guided by the framework of John Fiske’s Television-as-culture theory, Hobbes’ Superiority theory of humor, and Jocano’s Pamantayan system, it has been found in the narrative that Yaya was found mainly to perform her tasks and to adjust to Angelina’s behavior and needs. Although Yaya spoiled Angelina by giving in to her demands, Angelina’s mom was found to be the reason why Angelina thinks that her actions were appropriate. Her lack of rules for Yaya to enforce, and her not being able impose discipline on Angelina due to her absence, were clearly the reasons for Angelina’s misbehavior. Without proper guidance coming from her, Angelina also became unaware of her cruelty to Yaya. It has been revealed that Yaya was also the one to whom the humor was directed at in the segment. Her inability to speak and comprehend the English language was what made most of the segments funny. The data significantly showed that although Yaya is considered as a central figure in the Filipino homes, she was still perceived as inferior by the audiences who watch and are entertained by the segment. In totality, the “Ang Spoiled” segment was found to be a venue that undermined Yaya’s importance and contribution in the most basic unit in the society, the family.
This study looks into what Filipino children find humorous in foreign cartoons. It aims to identify the types of incongruities that Filipino children find funny in the cartoon programs that they watch. The researcher used qualitative methods such as observation and interview. The researcher chose an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants, currently the most popular TV cartoon among Filipino children, to be viewed by a group of kindergarten pupils of University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) aged 5-6 years old. The researcher observed the informants’ reaction while watching SpongeBob Squarepants. An interview with the informants was also conducted to provide supplementary information. Based on the results, this research identified distortion and exaggeration as the most effective type of incongruity that makes Filipino children laugh. It is followed by violation of rational behavior, violation of expectations, physical discrepancy, and violation of conceptual thought. The results indicate that despite the fact that these popular cartoons are made by foreign creators, Filipino children are able to relate to them. Filipino children can understand incongruities that were created based on common human experiences rather than on the creators’ culture alone.
This study explores the Filipino mindsets utilized in creating profiling strategies within courtship, job application, classroom setting, and security setting, as well as their ways of presenting themselves with such contexts. This was done through identifying and anchoring profiling techniques to different stereotypes, values, and belief systems utilized by Filipinos in creating impressions toward others, as well as in managing other’s impressions toward them. Furthermore, this study delves into the differences between the impression formation and impression management strategies done by Filipinos within the four aforementioned contexts. These strategies, as seen in the related literature as well as the framework of this study suggest that the nature of interpersonal interactions within the four social contexts is associated with the impressions that people make toward each other. This study interviewed 16 informants and conducted three focus group interviews during the data gathering period. Three key informants, experts in the job application context, classroom setting context, and security context were also interviewed to get hold of information from professional sources. This study establishes that impression management of Filipinos changes according to the social context where they are situated and that among the temporal features of individuals, it is the clothing that determines the social category to which they belong to. One pertinent finding of this study is that Filipinos usually categorize based on one’s clothing in order to know his/her financial capabilities. This categorization strategy results to varying approach in dealing with the profiled individuals belonging to different social groups. Furthermore, the proponents of this study assert that in order to achieve a positive projection of one’s self, a person should convince other people that he/she is affiliated to an individual or institution who/which is highly regarded in the Filipino society. Also, as supported by past literature and the results of this study, Filipinos rarely exhibit rejection and/or aggressiveness in dealing with other people. Lastly, this study purports that pakikiramdam, importance of filial alliances, male superiority, tribal affiliation and respect are the Filipino mindsets that are involved in Filipino impression formation and management.

This study can be best used by dating counsellors, marriage counsellors, personality coaches, as well as guidance counsellors in universities so as to improve the interpersonal relationships among the main players in the four contexts abovementioned.

ABSTRACT

This project explores the kind of interaction that occurs between a deaf and a hearing person who both belong to one family. People with disabilities are often questioned about their capability to fulfill their role in a family, especially if they are the parents. There are already a lot of films and documentaries that tell stories of deaf people but most of them only showed the issues faced by deaf people during their childhood years up to their adolescent years (e.g. disability awareness, language acquisition, socialization and etc.). But deaf people’s lives do not stop when they passed the adolescent stage because adulthood and parenthood are bigger issues that they have to face. Hence, this film aims to depict this particular stage of deaf people’s lives through the characters of the deaf mother and her hearing son. Also, this project analyzes the fact that miscommunication, which is the biggest factor that creates conflict between the two characters in the film, can only be resolved if the two characters decide to change their perspectives and they both exert efforts to understand one another as suggested by the process of reframing which is included in the Interactional View theory of Paul Watzlawick.
Baban, Jesse Rey Logrosa. ''Wala Nang Next Time''. University of the Philippines Diliman, College of Mass Communication, 2010. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis.

''Wala Nang Next Time'' is a musical film that tells the story of a senior high school student who stands on a point where he is about to face a series of significant changes in life. It narrates the difficulties of making decisions that are influenced by moral, social, and personal motives. It is about mourning for what is past, appreciating the best of what is present, and confronting the fears and hopes of the future.

The film is an attempt to produce the type of musical wherein the numbers are integrated ‘naturally’ as part of the plot. The songs are strategically placed at moments where the characters feel heightened emotions. The film reinforces Martin Sutton’s idea that “the musical ... turns its wayward dreamers into conformists” (195) which mirrors the custom of an ideal Filipino setting wherein children are sometimes compelled to follow their parents’ advice despite yearning for a life they themselves envisioned.

ABSTRACT

This study explores the media habits and social support system of night workers through the use of focus interviews and surveys. Respondents and informants came from the following sectors of the labor force: Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO), Health, Security, Transportation, Retail and Service. Guided by the Social Support Theory, Symbolic Interactionism Theory and Jurgen Habermas’ concepts of external social systems, institutional spheres and life-world, the paper aimed to gauge the perceived social support system of the night workers and to explore how night work affects their lifestyle, media habits, and interaction with their significant and generalized others.

Overall, night workers have a good perception on all aspects of social support: appraisal, informational, sense of belonging/emotional, instrumental and assurance of self worth. Having a high perception of social support, which was mostly received from significant others, enabled the Nocturnal Beings to look and cope with their stressful situation in a more positive way. However, a high perceived support did not make the work completely comforting to the worker. It only buffered the effects of night work. Nocturnal beings faced the dilemmas of an altered lifestyle, safety and security issues and significantly, limited and shallow social interaction since time was allotted more for rest and sleep.

On the other hand, media served essentially as an instrumental and informational support to them. The use of media at work depended on its availability and the company’s policies. Radio and cellular phones were the most available and most utilized media. It was evident that external support systems had discretion over the institutional spheres and most notably, over the night worker’s life-world.

Abstract

This thesis focused on how diabetics/those at risk of diabetes are influenced by the messages in ampalaya food supplement television advertisements, as well as how their attitudes and behavior change in line with their general view on health and nutrition.

Review of literature revealed that the use of food supplements is often associated with a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, herbal medicines and food supplements are promoted for preventive care, but a significant number of patients take these to treat a disease.

There were four communication models used in this study, namely, the Health Belief Model, the Elaboration Likelihood Model, and the Theory of Planned Behavior/Reasoned Action, and the Steps to Behavior Change Model. Concepts from each of the theories were adopted in order to come up with an integrated conceptual/operational framework.

The researcher used a textual analysis form that highlighted the communicative, visual, and aural aspects of ampalaya supplement television advertisements (i.e., ABS Bitter Herbs, Ampalaya Plus, Charantia, and GluControl). She also conducted a survey of 100 diabetics and people at risk of being diabetics. Both methods employed a nonprobability purposive sampling.

Findings of the study revealed that ampalaya supplement television advertisements use communicative, visual, and aural aspects in order to convey messages. It was found that the most common message in these commercials is “With a balanced diet, regular exercise, and ampalaya supplements, diabetes can be prevented/controlled.” The use of celebrity endorsers including newscasters) was also common in the advertisements.

Those with higher educational attainment, those with higher income, and those who have riskier personal medical history (i.e., has diabetes, experiences symptoms) tend to purchase ampalaya supplements more than their corresponding opposites. A big majority of the respondents (63%)stated that they have not tried any form of ampalaya supplement because they are unsure of its effectiveness. Meanwhile, 59% reasoned out that their doctors do not prescribe ampalaya supplements to handle their diabetes. On average, the respondents strongly disagree that drinking ampalaya supplements can cure diabetes. They also disagree that ampalaya supplements are effective even in just preventing/controlling diabetes.

This study examines how a notion of nationalism that transcends traditional
notions on citizenship and allegiance is possible. Also this research looked into the role
that the New Media play with its ability to host claims and form networks. This research
zoomed in on the unique strand of feminism present in the Philippine women‘s
movement to give a historical perspective on how history contributed to the current
framework of GABRIELA.

This study examines the expansion of GABRIELA in the USA and its
contributions to the Philippine women‘s movement and to the notion of nationalism
mediated through Internet tools it uses. Given the opportunities opened by New Media in
doing organizing work and hosting claims, this research discusses how the strand of
activism of GABRIELA translates on their online presence.

With the case of GABRIELA in the USA which is miles away from the
Philippines and with membership that include second to third generation migrants, this
study tries to examine how the organization‘s political framework makes possible a
sisterhood that allows nationalism with an international solidarity aspect.
The analysis was done through the use of methodological triangulation with a
predominantly qualitative character. Research instruments used involved Focus
Interviews on members of the organization and Content Analysis of their web site.<br />
ABSTRACT

Twitter is a new social medium that focused on the idea of what is happening now, offering simple features, yet equally satisfying as other complicated social network sites. Utilizing Uses and Gratifications Approach and Social Construction of Technology, the researcher explored the usage of Twitter.com among Metro Manila university students. Through online and face-to-face surveys, supported by online interviews, the researcher established the motivations, evaluation, and general usage of the site. It can be said that the social media experience that Twitter gave was the interrelationship of these concepts. Boyd and Ellison (2007) laid out the definition of social network site (SNS), but this definition suggested a passive use of SNS. Users were well immersed into SNS. To attain full experience of SNS, particularly Twitter, the user must fulfill four factors: creating a profile; forming a list of contacts; viewing, traversing and interacting with this list of contacts; and updating profile frequently. With this, the users’ motivations, evaluation and usage of SNS will merge to being a worthwhile social media experience.

The emergence of the self-conscious male in recent times has created a niche market for male audiences. Companies have employed global advertising – using advertisements for products in English, with the intent of attracting consumers internationally – in order to appeal to the target demographic. Using advertisements in men’s magazines, marketers communicate messages about masculinity to male readers in order to persuade them to subscribe to products geared towards men. In this study, a content analysis of 172 ads from 5 different men’s magazines in the Philippines was conducted in order to study the portrayal of models in advertisements, as well as the techniques used by advertisers in defining and portraying masculinity. An online survey was also conducted, with 100 respondents comprised of readers of men’s magazines residing in Quezon City. Findings from the content analysis revealed that advertisements in men’s magazines in the Philippines make use of Caucasian models in advertisements for fashion, while Asian models are used in health and cosmetics-related products. The survey, on the other hand, revealed that Filipino men’s definition of masculinity, as well as their lifestyles, are indeed influenced by these advertisements, but only to a limited extent, and mainly about staying in good shape and looking presentable.
Dreaming is similar to thinking. The only difference is that thinking happens when one is awake and dreaming occurs while at sleep. In dreaming, the ideas being expressed are not based on the thoughts which we are aware of while we are in the waking state. Instead, it dwells on the repressed ideas that have long been buried within our subconscious. Dream is a bridge which allows us to see what lies within the subconscious through visual images and not words or concrete thoughts.

In the short narrative film, “Maglilili”, Gerardo escapes from reality and joins the Maglilili in a dream world. The film will give life to the folkloric character of the Kapampangans who lures people and makes them disappear for days, even months and when they do return, that’s the only time they would realize that they have been gone for a long time.

Title: “LOST” SHEEP? : INFLUENCES IN THE FORMATION OF RELIGIOUS MEANINGS AND IDENTITIES OF FORMER PRACTICING CATHOLICS

Abstract: Dacanay, M. H. A., and Manabat, N. A. P. (2010).“Lost” Sheep?: Influences in the Formation of Religious Meanings and Identities of Former Practicing Catholics. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines-College of Mass Communication.

This thesis discusses meanings attached to Catholic practices and symbols, as well as influences in the formation of religious meanings and identities of Filipino youth who drifted away from Catholicism (non-practicing Catholics, converts to another religion, atheists/agnostics). This study also looks into face-concern manifestations (self, other, and mutual) in the various directions of religious conversion.
Past studies revealed that interpersonal and intrapersonal factors have varying influences in conversion, and personal religious experiences are also diverse. This study addresses the lack of studies that focus on Filipino religious experience, as well the communication aspect of the process of conversion away from Catholicism.
Insights from three theories (namely George Herbert Mead‘s Symbolic Interactionism, Michael Hecht’s Communication Theory of Identity, and Stella Ting-Tomey’s Face Negotiation Theory) guided this study. The construction of meaning is made through the interaction process of the self with the society or the social world. Also, the individual builds frames of identity which become the source of one’s motivations on religious practice and expectations toward religion. These frames involve self-cognitions on being Catholic, family’s religious background, membership in Catholic organizations, attendance in Catholic schools, and interactions with/observations on the clergy, fellow Catholics, and friends. The direction of conversion is influenced by the facework strategies that an individual employs depending on one’s locus of facework.
For the purpose of this study, the researchers conducted 21 focus interviews following criterion and snowball sampling. Findings of the study revealed that Catholic practices and symbols were generally understood negatively by informants due to the lack of in-depth explanation and emphasis on significance in Catholic families and schools. Undesirable outcomes of meaning and identity formation resulted to decisions to drift away from Catholicism. Looking at the informants’ stories of religious transformation, conversion to other religions was interpersonally driven, while turning into non-practicing Catholics and religiously-unaffiliated individuals (e.g. atheists and agnostics) is mainly motivated by intrapersonal influences. Concerning facework, mutual-face concern was manifested in inward (concealed) conversions, while self-face concern was demonstrated in outward (overt) conversions.
The results of this study call for the need for programs and activities specifically targeted to Catholic youth that will help them appreciate the practical applications of their religion. Moreover, teachers of religion (including the clergy) should be well-trained and serve as role models for Catholic youth.
ABSTRACT

This study is an account of the organizational culture and life of tabloid photojournalists. “What does it mean to be a tabloid photojournalist?” and “Why is the world of tabloid photojournalists the way it is?” are the two main queries that were explored through the qualitative research methods of focus interview and participant observation. It drew heavily on the humanistic perspective of sociology and anthropology with relevance to the Organizational Culture theory. Alongside this perspective are the other approaches of symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, and social constructionism.

The study related the perception and condition of tabloid photojournalists through the stories they shared. With their perspectives considered, an understanding of their customs was gained. It revealed mechanisms by which tabloid photojournalists rationalize their practices as the accepted norm. Their struggles and aspirations are their justifications. This is evident not only in their stories, but in their own language as well whose peculiar terms attest to the meanings and manifestations of their culture. Patterns of similar experiences and sentiments sustain the beliefs and practices of tabloid photojournalists. This was accessed through their insights and observed through their interaction.

ABSTRACT

This film explores the relationship of a mother and daughter who suffered grief due to the father’s death. It conveys how they were able to overcome their grief and also mend the indifference that eventually occurred between them.

Acceptance is the hardest challenge for the mother, but with the daughter’s continuous efforts of reaching out to her, she was able to accept her life without her husband and recognize the efforts made by her child.

The author desires to question the existence of stability, belongingness, and security in a family and to pin point the notion posed on family roles and obligations.

Family as the major source of security and belongingness and its vitality to an individual’s needs are two of the messages the filmmaker wants to connect in this film.

The film is an attempt to bring about a realization, that we, as part of a certain family structure have roles and obligations to be carried out for the development of each member.

It uses semiotics and relational dialectics as the theories to convey how the lansungan became a representation of a broken relationship that got mended through time and efforts.
This thesis is a purely qualitative study which reflects the pervasiveness of visual media in our lives. Specifically, this study aimed to examine the visual representations of Former-President Corazon “Cory” Aquino and President Gloria “Gloria” Macapagal-Arroyo in visual media, both in newspapers and magazine. Guided by the semiotic theory, photographs of the presidents gathered from The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and Time magazine were visual analyzed. The Encoding/Decoding theory was used to find out how selected Filipinos perceived the images, colors, signs, symbols and gestures associated with Cory and Gloria. While the Feminist Political Theory was used as a lens in looking into the political practices of Cory and Gloria based on their perceived leadership style, characteristics and advocacies. The emergence of visual culture was explored thru the verification of the selected Filipinos’ perceived representations of Cory and Gloria vis-a-vis their visual media representations. Findings revealed that Cory was positively represented in the visual media while Gloria was both positively and negatively represented. Visual media representations showed not only the physical aspects of Cory and Gloria but also their expressions and characteristics. It was proven that visual media could elicit different interpretations from different spectators.

'''Abstract'''<br />
This study explores the formation of relationship between the visually impaired children of the Philippine National School for the Blind and their significant others, according to the manner of self-disclosure, expression of their needs of inclusion, control, affection, and other needs, and the use of new technology to communicate.
The related literature suggests that much of the assistance received by the visually impaired individuals comes from their families. No local study dealing with the visually impaired children’s utilization of new technology to communicate was found.

Guided by the Theory of Self-Disclosure and Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation Theory, the study aspired to discover the role of communication in establishing the relationship of visually impaired children and their significant others. On the other hand, Technology Acceptance Model and Dependency theory were used to assess the utilization of new technology for communication.

This is a purely qualitative study, and thus several methods were used, specifically key informant interviews, focus interviews, focus group discussions, and observations.

Their needs for inclusion, control, and affection are manifested in their venues, objects, and extent of disclosure. Evidence of the use of need to form relationships with their significant others is found in the kind of relationships they have. The closer the relationship, the more open a child is to expressing his or her material and non-material needs.
Furthermore, the visually impaired children are already knowledgeable in using cellphones and computers. Aside from communication, these new technologies are often used for academics and entertainment purposes.
Dependence of visually impaired children on new communication technologies is evident on the changes in their cognition, feelings, and behavior. They become dependent on new technologies when they have acquired knowledge of the devices. Children who can live without cellphones and computers are usually those who do not see their uses yet, and those who do not know how to operate them.

'''Abstract'''

The images of the mothers in the films of Lino Brocka – a veritable auteur who used film as his medium in expressing his insights through his works from 1970 to 1991 – gravitate towards two clusters of images: 1) the mothers who struggle within the confines of their role, and 2) the mothers who question their role and affirm themselves as persons.

Parallel to the evolution of these images is Brocka’s development in political consciousness as an artist. Indeed, when Brocka understood and acted upon the oppressive situation in the Philippines under martial law, he integrated the issue of human rights in his films as his concept of women and their rights became more progressive. This crucial point in Brocka’s politicization as an artist also marks the shift in character between the said two clusters of images.

Brocka’s films from 1970 to 1982 generally belong to the first cluster of images. Here, Brocka’s familiarity and affinity with the types of mothers as portrayed by the earlier studio films, popular literature, and “komiks” are manifested. Within this cluster, the following images are identified and fleshed out: 1) the “ideal” mother; 2) mother as victim; and 3) the controlling matriarch. Among these, the “ideal” mother is the most oppressed. By accepting and internalizing the patriarchal construct of the mother as the “ilaw ng tahanan,” the woman enters into a role that imposes strict characteristics for her not just to display but internalize. Thus the “ideal” mother, to maintain the bliss of home and family life, leads her children in bringing pleasure to the father, looks and feels good all the time, and suffers silently. The mother as victim comes next to the “ideal” mother with regard to oppression. While for the “ideal” mother, the source of oppression is internal, for the victimized mother, it is external in the form of the violence and cunning of men and the patriarchal demands of the society that they dominate. The controlling matriarch also struggles within the confines of her role as mother. Superficially, the matriarch has power over people, objects, and objectified people, but this is never stable. The matriarch merely took over the properties left by the father; thus, she strains to maintain the volatile stability of her “realm” by controlling her children either through overt meddling or emotional manipulation.

As Brocka made a name for himself, he was empowered by producers who believed in his talent as an auteur who achieves a sense of balance between mass appeal and artistry in his films. He felt that he no longer had to be confined to the “tried-and-tested” and “safe” ways of portraying the mother. He progressively expressed his creative control amidst the commercial context of the industry.

As the auteur became more politicized as an artist, he was able to flesh out more progressive characterizations, narratives, and resultant images of the mothers which belong to the second cluster, namely: 1) mother as transgressor, and 2) mother as aggressor of patriarchy. Brocka’s films from 1984 to 1991 generally belong to this second cluster of images. Here, these mothers question their role and affirm themselves as persons. The liberated mother challenges patriarchy by openly expressing her sexual desire and refusing to judge herself from the patriarchal point of view that categorizes women as either “pure” or “loose” and mothers as either “good” or “bad.” The transgressive mother also declines to take it upon herself to protect her daughter’s innocence at the expense of the truth. She also refuses martyrdom and struggles for power with men both in the domestic and the larger social spheres. As the aggressor of patriarchy, the mother directly confronts not just her husband or father but the dominant patriarchal system itself. The mother, as a person, demands justice that is due to her. She also proceeds to search for social justice in the collective in which she, her husband, and children are part of. She does not limit her energy to the family; for her, the family and the collective are not distinct spheres. Indeed, the personal is also the political.
IKATATLUMPUNG KAARAWAN NI SUSAN'''

The film Ikatatlampung Kaarawan ni Susan is about the struggle of a woman
with the image constructs of society. Susan is turning thirty and the pressures of marriage
and career are both present with her persistent mother and her work at the office. She
finds herself immobilized in between these two extremes.
It seems that the only obvious choices available to women in society are family or
career. But in fact, there are - and should be - more defining choices in life for a woman.
It is now up to Susan to decide to choose and conform to what society dictates of her.

ABSTRACT

This research paper examines the role of The Philippine Collegian as a student publication and a student institution in the University of the Philippines (UP) and its pursuit for academic freedom and press freedom. The articles published in 2000-2008 were analyzed qualitatively through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) guided by theories on political economy of media and framing as a facet of agenda-setting. Pertinent findings reveal that the direct assault on academic and press freedom is due to capitalist interests entrenched in education. The neoliberal policies systematized the rising cost of education and privatization of student services. The Collegian did not only expose the State and its machinery as the primary news actors who implemented neoliberal policies in UP, but also gave preferential exposure to the progressive block who denounced every attempt to further curtail academic and press freedom. The Collegian, however, was not boxed-up in exposition; it also served as a propagandist in advocating quality and accessible education as its primary way of pursuing academic and press freedom. It encourages the necessity and inevitability of mass movement as the highest form of parliamentary struggle to advocate democratic rights in the era of neoliberal globalization.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the audience’s process of evaluation of news programs, specifically that of TEN: The Evening News, whose deviance from traditional news programs was assumed to produce a generally negative assessment. It aims to provide an explanation on how the audience evaluates a news program to be socially responsible, including news programs that employ innovative strategies in delivering the news.

Two research methods were used in the study. First, a textual analysis was done to determine the features of TEN that make it different from traditional news. Results of the analysis were used to create a comprehensive guide for the focus interviews, which were conducted to gain insight on the dynamics of norms, perceptions, and motives on the general normative reading of news programs.

Results of the study showed that the audience considers TEN: The Evening News to be socially responsible despite its novelty of format. The audience made use of both their public and private norms in making their assessments, with the latter dominating and affecting the other. As long as the audience is satisfied with the information that they get from a news program, they would continue to watch it even if they produce a negative evaluation.

Abstract

This thesis focused on how selected Filipinos perceive feminine beauty as well as its formation and the external and internal factors that influence it. Also, it focused on what feminine beauty is and the distinction of the perception of feminine beauty across gender.

Review of related literature revealed that mass media and advertising equate beauty to thinness. This ideal of female beauty has a negative impact on females resulting to eating disorders and disturbance in their appearances. Furthermore, women want to improve their appearances by purchasing beauty products or resort to cosmetic surgery. It was found out too that Western ideals of beauty propagate through local television and magazine advertisements. Thus, media influences women’s ideals of beauty. Also, most studies focused on certain products or campaigns when exploring about the females’ perception on beauty such as skin-whitener commercials and other TV advertisements. Moreover, most studies explored the females’ point of view when it comes to beauty, not exploring the perception across gender.

This study adapted Firmeza’s study framework (1995) and used Perception Model, Filipino Value System, Constructivism, Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, Persuasion theory, Reinforcement theory and Agenda Setting theory. Concepts from each of the theories were borrowed in order to come up with an integrated conceptual framework.

The researcher conducted a series of focus interviews and focus group discussions that primarily explored into how the perception of beauty was formed and the factors that influenced its formation. The focus group discussions and focus interviews gave an in-depth inquiry as to what factors contributed to the meaning of beauty among selected Filipinos. Both methods employed a purposeful sampling.

Findings of the study revealed that in forming perceptions of feminine beauty, a lot of factors are to be considered. External sources of information such as family, friends, partners, social groups, society & culture, work, advertisements and mass media were found out to be influential. Also, it was found out that individuals have their own standard of feminine beauty based on their upbringing and maturity. Moreover, the informants primarily associated feminine beauty with outer beauty or physical attractiveness because they shared that it is first seen by people. However, inner beauty was considered essential most especially in interacting with other people more so, in keeping relationships with others. Inner beauty was said to be longer lasting compared to outer beauty. Furthermore, there is a need for one to be beautiful for self fulfillment and for others’ acceptance. In addition, it was found out in this study that perceptions of feminine beauty vary across gender.

This study will be of great use for women who have distorted perceptions of beauty and low self esteem. It will also help the audience to be more critical of what mass media present as beautiful and consider themselves as beautiful too. In addition, this study will contribute to the learning of different fields such as mass communication, arts, psychology and anthropology.
<br />
This thesis explores the role of watchers in providing support to their mental patients as influenced by the external support they themselves received. The family is perceived as the main provider of social support to mental patients as they are responsible for taking care of them. However, mental illness confers a stigma, which makes recovery more difficult for the patients and their family. Filipino families seek strength from their interpersonal relationships as evident in their practices of pakikisama, pagdadamayan, and pakikipagkapwa. To explore the nature of social support received by the watchers and how it influences the care that they provide for their mental patients, interviews and observation were done inside the Acute Crisis Intervention Section (ACIS) of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH). Primary data were collected from interviews with watchers, hospital staffs, and visitors. Watchers also need affection, inclusion, and control. These are provided by their external networks (e.g., relatives, friends, hospital staffs) through various forms of supports, which make them more capable of providing care to their mental patients.

'''Abstract'''

Healthcare, such as medicine use, is essential to individuals but many do not have the capacity to obtain proper healthcare, especially in the country. In view of these concerns, the study aimed to determine and explore the concept of health of urban and rural residents and the factors that influence it as well as how social environment shape decisions to rely on branded, generic or herbal medicines.

Five communication theories were integrated, namely, Health Belief Model, Standpoint Theory, Theory of Reasoned Action, Expectancy-Value Theory, and Information-Processing Theory. Utilizing these theories, the researchers examined the interconnection of personal factors (concept of health and knowledge on existing laws related to medicines), intervening factors (social environment and perceived differences and barriers on medicine types) and healthcare behaviour (processing of health information, healthcare and reliance on particular medicine types).

This study consisted of 200 randomly-selected households which were equally divided between urban (cities within Metro Manila) and rural areas (province of Catanduanes). As a method to probe and complement survey responses, six (6) case studies were conducted. These case studies which were composed of six families were divided into three categories: branded medicine-reliant family, generic medicine-reliant family and herbal medicine-reliant family. For each category, there were two case studies (1 urban; 1 rural).

In addition, an illness remedy report was conducted in the middle of the FGD (case studies) wherein the families were given a sheet of paper with different enumerated illnesses. They were then asked to talk among themselves as a family on the forms of healthcare they do in curing all given illness. Follow up questions were asked at the end.

Results revealed that personal factors are shaped by social environment especially family and doctors. However, urban and rural residents were found active communicators as shown by how they seek, screen, compare, store, and analyze own opinions with others. As they processed health information, perceived barriers such as cost and effectiveness were found influential in affecting healthcare decisions. In effect, healthcare decisions are then finally formed which leads to an individual reliance to branded medicines, generic medicines or herbal medicines.

In-depth focused interviews were conducted with 12 key informants who were once avid listeners of Campus Radio. The study interpreted their attitude towards the shift as reflected in their reactions, sentiments and opinions, the changes in the pattern of their listening behavior and the factors that affected it, and the personal and social influences that led to the changes in their listening preferences.

The results showed that the listeners initially manifested a negative attitude of rejection towards the shift but gradually gained a positive attitude of acceptance as they understood the business aspect of the industry. After the shift, their listening habit declined in frequency as they transferred to several other FM stations, while some discontinued listening to the radio altogether and resorted to the television, the Internet, cellphones that support mp3 files, and portable mp3 players.

The researcher concluded that DWLS 97.1’s shift to a masa format has shaped the listening preferences of its former Campus Radio listeners as manifested in their attitude towards the shift and in the change in their radio listening habit. The factors that affected
the change in their listening habit were their priority over academic obligations as college students, thus, they had less time for radio, and the rise of the technological devices for more convenient acquisition of and access to music. Their listening preferences were influenced by (1) their personal musical taste, which matured overtime and changed as they gradually appreciated other stations’ music genres after the shift, and (2) their socioeconomic background.

The study used in-depth focused interviews to generate required data for the study. However, other methods in the future can be conducted such as focus group discussions with former avid Campus Radio listeners, or expert interviews with the station’s key personnel for a historical study, or a content analysis of the new format 97.1 Barangay LS to find out how it perpetuates the masa culture on FM along with other existing masa stations on the FM band today.

Moreover, the researcher recommends the use of the Uses and Gratifications Theory or a political economic perspective to understand the power relations between a station’s management and its listeners.

The framework of the study, the Frankfurt School Theory, provided a background on media’s power to impose content that molded the preferences of its audiences.

This study aims to understand the reasons why college students watch cartoon programs and whether watching cartoons affect their sense of identity. Focus group discussions were carried out to gather the necessary information.
Each discussion was divided into three parts: Part I focused on the needs that college students sought to meet in watching cartoon programs; Part II dealt with the gratifications that they got from watching; and Part III looked into whether watching cartoons affected the formations of their identities as adults.
People watch to fulfill certain needs. Adults watch primarily for entertainment, just like young children. They also watch for diversion, establishment of relationship with others, surveillance, and formation of personal identity.
The personal identities of the young adult respondents who continue to watch cartoons are not affected.

This study looked into the attitudes of qualified first time voters of the University of the Philippines (UP) towards advocacy campaigns concerning voter registration and at the PR strategy that Youth Vote Philippines (YVote) has taken to push its advocacy. A huge part of the voting population is aged 18-35 and is classified as “the youth”. However not all are able to exercise their right to vote because they failed to register for the elections.

Some groups like YVote have taken the initiative to launch information campaigns regarding voter registration as their advocacy. In order to promote their cause further, YVote makes use of strategies to strengthen its relations with the public. UP is one of the schools that have been exposed to these strategies. This study used a survey and the focused interview to gather data regarding the students’ attitudes towards voter registration and the role played by YVote in forming these attitudes. Influence and prevalent information sources that surfaced in the study showed that UP students had a positive attitude towards voter registration. This perspective, however, was not influenced by YVote’s strategy, but by other factors.

ABSTRACT

This study explores how Asian celebrities in 21st century Hollywood films influence Southeast Asian youth’s pride in being Asians. The researchers analyzed the main Asian celebrities of five of these films, namely “Charlie’s Angels Full Throttle”, “Rush Hour 3”, “Shanghai Knights”, “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and found out that Priming still exist in Hollywood films through the continued stereotyping of Asians. The researchers then conducted online interviews of the youth to know their perceptions and assessment of the celebrities in the studied Hollywood films. Accordingly, they used Piaget’s Constructivism and Bandura’s Social Learning Process as their theoretical guide. Data revealed that Southeast Asian youth perceive these celebrities as Westernized and hence, they do not want to imitate them. In addition, they are critical of how the roles of these celebrities are still limiting the diversity of the Asian culture. However, they are impressed with the Asian celebrities’ success in Hollywood, and they see Hollywood as a venue for Asians to be known by the world. In this study, Cultural Globalization, or the imposition of Hollywood Asian stereotypes on Southeast Asian youth takes a backseat as their Asian values are more impressed in their minds.
