Discourse Analysis on Filipino Mother-Daughter Relationship and Communication of Gender Norms, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

This thesis looks into the current gender norms of Filipino women and how these norms are being communicated within mother and daughter relationships. Gender norms are constructed and socialized within institutions such as the family, and in particular, mother-daughter dyads. To examine how gender norms are communicated in these dyads, this thesis analyzed interviews from 12 pairs of mothers and daughters from Metro Manila. The study employed feminist post-structuralism, family communication patterns theory, communicated narrative sense making theory, and Kapwa theory as guides to arrive at an understanding of how gender norms are learned within Filipino mother- daughter relationships. The findings from this thesis validated the literature describing that current gender norms in the Philippines are largely conservative, yet to an extent, liberal. It was also found that most of the mothers’ beliefs are communicated to the daughters; communication was usually one-way, spontaneous, and triggered by external events. Through discourse analysis, the researchers argue that construction of gender norms always locates women in relation to men, thus granting power to men’s perceptions. Discourses emerged from relationships and communication between mothers and daughters as they shared identities and beliefs.
To begin editing your site, you should update your logo. Click on the placeholder for your logo twice until the upload icon appears. Then, simply upload your logo image. After saving your changes, refresh your site to see that the W icon has been replaced with your logo, which will also serve as your site’s favicon. Next, you can add blocks to your site by Clicking on the plus button on the left corner of the screen will show the add block menu with a search bar on top and commonly used blocks below. You can click on tabs to browse block categories or type in a keyword to quickly search for a specific block. If you don’t want to use the mouse to click on the button, then you can also use a keyboard shortcut. Start by typing / to search for a block and then insert it by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. Each block has a toolbar that appears on top of it. The buttons in the toolbar change depending on the block you are editing. In addition to the toolbar, each block can have its own block settings, which appear in the right column of the edit screen. These settings vary depending on which block you are editing. For example, the Paragraph block lets you edit the text, background, and link color, as well as the typography. You can move blocks up and down and rearrange them. If you want to do this, just click to drag or drop or click the up and down buttons in the block toolbar.

=== Organizing Blocks in Groups and Columns ===
The block editor also comes with handy tools to manage and organize your content layouts. You can select multiple blocks by clicking on them while pressing the Shift key on your keyboard. After that, go ahead and click on the block type button in the toolbar to transform the selected blocks into Groups or Columns. You can then apply styles to the entire Group block, such as changing the alignment or spacing. The block editor also allows you to add an empty Group or Columns block. After that, you can fill them with other blocks. You can add any type of block in each column as needed. This allows you to create beautiful layouts for different use cases.

=== Adding Some Common Blocks in the Block Editor ===
The block editor can do everything the older classic editor did.

However, you will be doing things more quickly and elegantly than before. Plus, it can do much more, like letting you style your content with a bunch of no-code options.

Here are some of the common blocks that you can use.

1. Adding an Image in the Pages Block Editor

You can also drag and drop images from your computer, and the editor will automatically create an Image block.

Once you have added an image, you will be able to see the block settings, where you can add metadata for the image, like the alt text, image resolution size, and adding a link to the image.

2. Adding a Link in the Block Editor

The block editor comes with several blocks where you can add text. The most commonly used one is the Paragraph block, which has an insert link button in the toolbar.

All other commonly used text blocks also have a link button in the toolbar.
It is recommended that internal UP documents be properly created, processed, archived, maintained or shared via an '''internal''' document management system like '''[[UPDox]]''' or via a learning management system like '''[[Uvle|UVLe]]'''.
#Avoid duplication or having multiple, potentially conflicting or confusing sites. If a UPD unit already has a website, the same unit cannot create a '''New Pages.UPD''' site and reproduce the same information. It may, however, use '''New Pages.UPD''' for its projects or faculty or researchers' profiles that are not available on the original site. If a '''New Pages.UPD''' site is meant to supersede an old site, the latter must be deleted or archived in a non-public facility.
#A site on '''[http://pages.upd.edu.ph New Pages.UPD]''' has to have contact information that includes an official UPD email address.
To get started, enter https://new-pages.upd.edu.ph/ into your browser’s address bar and press Enter. This will take you to the Pages homepage. Next, click the “Login” button, which will direct you to the login page. If you are a first-time user, log in using your UP Mail. Once you have signed in, you will be able to retrieve your username and set your password.

After logging into your account, you will see a prompt on the screen asking you to change your password. You can choose to ignore this prompt and continue logging in using your UP Mail. However, if you would like to change your password, you can follow the on-screen instructions or go to the Profile tab in the dashboard to retrieve your username and set a new password for traditional login.

When you log into the platform for the first time, you will see only one site, which is the main site. If you want to create a new site manually, click on “Add New Site” and follow the prompts to register your new site.

On the site registration page
Enter your
Site Title
– Enter a title for your new site. This title will represent your website’s identity and should be concise and relevant to your content.

Site Name
– Input the name that will be used in your domain name. This is crucial as it helps visitors identify your site easily. Choose a name that reflects your brand or purpose.

Sub-directory
– Specify the sub-directory for your site. For example, this could look like https://new-pages.upd.edu.ph/newsite. This sub-directory will be the part of the URL that comes after the main domain, organizing your site structure.

To edit your site, click on its name to be redirected. Then, in the admin menu, simply select “Edit Site” to access the Site Editor.
The Site Editor enhances the block editing experience, which was previously restricted to just posts and pages, by expanding it to the entire website. This means you can utilize blocks to design and customize elements such as headers, footers, sidebars, and other areas of your site. It offers a no-code, visual approach to building and customizing your website from top to bottom. Additionally, it enables you to edit templates and template parts, styles, and site-wide defaults.
When you first enter the Site Editor, it opens by default in fullscreen mode.
The Toggle Block Inserter allows users to show or hide the block inserter, enabling the addition of blocks, patterns, or media to your post or page. Next, the Tools feature lets you switch between editing a block and selecting it. Choose the Select tool (or press the Escape key on your keyboard) to select individual blocks. When a block is selected, press the Enter key to return to editing.
The Undo and Redo options allow you to undo an action or redo an undone action.
The Document Overview offers two tabs: List View and Outline.
Outline: This shows the post/page details, including character and word counts, estimated reading time, the number of paragraphs and blocks, and the document outline demonstrating the structure of headings.
The Command Palette helps streamline your workflow in the WordPress editor by providing a centralized location to manage various aspects of your site’s design.
Abstract

This study explores the Filipino mindsets utilized in creating profiling strategies within courtship, job application, classroom setting, and security setting, as well as their ways of presenting themselves with such contexts. This was done through identifying and anchoring profiling techniques to different stereotypes, values, and belief systems utilized by Filipinos in creating impressions toward others, as well as in managing other’s impressions toward them. Furthermore, this study delves into the differences between the impression formation and impression management strategies done by Filipinos within the four aforementioned contexts. These strategies, as seen in the related literature as well as the framework of this study suggest that the nature of interpersonal interactions within the four social contexts is associated with the impressions that people make toward each other. This study interviewed 16 informants and conducted three focus group interviews during the data gathering period. Three key informants, experts in the job application context, classroom setting context, and security context were also interviewed to get hold of information from professional sources. This study establishes that impression management of Filipinos changes according to the social context where they are situated and that among the temporal features of individuals, it is the clothing that determines the social category to which they belong to. One pertinent finding of this study is that Filipinos usually categorize based on one’s clothing in order to know his/her financial capabilities. This categorization strategy results to varying approach in dealing with the profiled individuals belonging to different social groups. Furthermore, the proponents of this study assert that in order to achieve a positive projection of one’s self, a person should convince other people that he/she is affiliated to an individual or institution who/which is highly regarded in the Filipino society. Also, as supported by past literature and the results of this study, Filipinos rarely exhibit rejection and/or aggressiveness in dealing with other people. Lastly, this study purports that pakikiramdam, importance of filial alliances, male superiority, tribal affiliation and respect are the Filipino mindsets that are involved in Filipino impression formation and management.

This study can be best used by dating counsellors, marriage counsellors, personality coaches, as well as guidance counsellors in universities so as to improve the interpersonal relationships among the main players in the four contexts abovementioned.

ABSTRACT

This study offers an analysis of how the Filipino Youth is represented in the music videos of the contemporary rock band, Urbandub. It aims to examine and verify if representation is made through the aural and visual components of the music video. The researcher tried to explore the current situation of the music video industry in terms of the representations being made in the text of locally produced music videos. Stuart Hall’s Model of Encoding-Decoding Media Discourse was used as the study framework, which postulates that producers of media text are only interested in distribution and consumption rather than the transmission of meaningful and relevant messages. The study attempted to probe into this, determining whether the representation of the Filipino youth in these selected music videos were intended only for the promotion of Urbandub and their songs, but also for reflecting issues and experiences concerning the Filipino youth. The sole research method that was employed for this study is an interpretative textual analysis of selected Urbandub music videos. The lyrics of the songs were analyzed alongside with the corresponding music videos and their visual elements. Issues and experiences involving the youth were found to reflect on the lyrics of the songs. In turn, the music videos were able to translate and represent these issues and experiences of the Filipino youth visually.

This study aims to find out how the Filipino university students accept Koreanovelas. Through a one-shot survey of research, the study tried to find out the demographic characteristics of the respondents, their level of exposure to the program, their preferences for watching Korean dramas, and their acceptance of the characteristics and other aspects of Koreanovelas. The respondents consisted of 200 college students representing five different universities in Metro Manila.

Survey results revealed that majority of the university students watched Koreanovelas regularly for entertainment purposes. The main appeals of the Korean dramas are the following: unique and exciting plot, fast-paced stories, fashionable and good-looking Korean characters, trendy culture, and other elements such as romantic sentiment expressed in the drama and the use of enticing music.

Findings also revealed that the respondents had generally favorable acceptance towards Korean male and female characters, Korean fashion and home products shown in the Koreanovela programs being aired in the Philippines.

This study hopes to provide insights to the youth of today about international programming. Furthermore, through this study the researcher aspires to provide a glimpse of how the young audience, particularly the university students, recognize the characteristics and other aspects of Korean dramas.

In addition, the study can present information on how the Filipino youth see Koreanovelas as a whole. The researcher hopes that the findings of this research can be used to advance studies on Korean drama programs.

The study focuses on the coverage of dengue fever done by broadsheets, tabloids and news websites. It made an attempt to distinguish each medium from the other via content analysis of articles. The study also took note of public perception of the disease. This is done through survey of 100 college students in Metro Manila. The respondents were asked basic facts about dengue and their response after being exposed to information about the disease. The gatekeeping and framing theories, provides the framework for the analysis on how editorial decisions are made in the newsroom. To acquire the information from the inside, an interview with the news editor of the Philippine Daily Inquirer was conducted. The analysis revealed that nothing much differs in terms of coverage. The characteristics and limitations of each genre greatly affect the way it covers dengue. The public is basically well-informed of dengue but it does not do much action on the information they know. Also, it revealed that people tune more to broadcast medium as a source of information. The researcher recommends a wider analysis of other broadsheets, tabloids and news websites so as to really understand the formation of news in these media. Also, inclusion of the broadcast media, namely TV and radio, can give more depth.

Lights, Camera, Product Placements!: A Textual Analysis on the Study of How Product Placements Create Layers of Meaning in ABS-CBN’s I Love Betty La Fea

ABSTRACT

This qualitative study aimed to find out how product placements create layers of meaning in the teleserye I Love Betty La Fea, a franchise of the Columbian series Yo Soy Betty La Fea aired on ABS-CBN last 2008.
To find out the layers of meaning created by product placements in I Love Betty La Fea, the researcher purposively selected the first fifty episodes of the teleserye and performed content analysis and textual analysis.

The researcher employed Roland Barthe’s Denotation and Connotation Model as a guide in this research. The Denotation and Connotation Model facilitated in identifying the surface and associated meanings of product placements. The model was used to describe the functional value and exchange value of product placements in the teleserye. Furthermore, the theory of Structuralism was also used as a lens in the study. The theory states that structures are “complex whole capable of analysis into its constituent elements” (Sturrock, 2003). For this study, the researcher situated the culture and mass media as the structures governing the meaning production of product placements.

Results showed that product placements do create layers of meaning in the teleserye. This was shown through incorporating the functional and exchange values of products in the dialogues in order to persuade the viewers towards consumption. Aside from this, clusters of meaning were also identified in the product placements. Clusters of meaning comprised of the seven observed themes conveyed by product placements in the teleserye. These themes were: high regard for beauty, the search for love, strong family orientation, the social value of eating, cooking as domestic labor and consumption, household as a unit of production and consumption, and stereotyping. These themes were rooted and bounded under the governing structures of culture and mass media. The influence of culture and mass media contributed in creating a structured reality for viewers in relation to product consumption.

Lastly, the researcher concluded that product placements presented its overt economic function in the teleserye: to sell the products and gain profit out of it. The teleserye packaged and presented these product placements in a way that it could fulfill the “needs” of the viewers and lure them towards consumption. It was evident that the culture of capitalism was perpetuated in the teleserye.

For future studies, the researcher recommends the use of Agenda Setting Theory to provide the perspectives of how media practitioners deliberate and promote the importance of product placements in the teleserye. Moreover, audience reception analysis can also be done on future researchePrs in order to find out how television viewers perceive the meanings portrayed by product placements. This can attest if television viewers understand the messages that advertisers and media practitioners convey to the public.
ABSTRACT

This study believes that each television show or program speaks of a voice of the community and the culture from which it emanates. Thus, it delves into the study of representations, particularly of the Philippine criminal justice system in a television serial. The criminal justice system is the instrument by which the government controls and regulates crime. In the Philippines, the criminal justice system has five interdependent pillars: law enforcement, prosecution, courts, jail system, and the community. This study focuses on the representations of the Philippine criminal justice system in Dahil May Isang Ikaw, a television serial. It also aims to answer how the television serial portrays the environment in relation to the representations of the criminal justice system and examine how the culture industry perspective rests beneath such representations. Overall, this study provides information about the criminal justice system, reads the implications of its representations, and scrutinizes the link of the culture industry with the representations, with a goal to inform and stir up the curiosity of its readers to question how, why, and what possibilities are present with the existence of such representations.

ABSTRACT

Fashion is a very common and basic human experience, which is often overlooked and branded as superficial. Whether we admit it or not, fashion is an integral part of our daily lives. A lot is expressed about a person’s character, mood, personality, ideals, and lifestyle through his or her choices of clothing. My thesis topic is about the representation of the sense of self and virtual identity through fashion blogs. Fashion bloggers deliberately post photographs of themselves wearing different outfits they wore on different occasions and situations. This study focuses on the fashion blogger’s virtual body and its packaged identity - how a virtual identity is created and how their sense of selves are projected to the world through the internet. Interpretations emphasize that fashion bloggers are not just empty virtual bodies but as clothed bodies, and bodies as lived experience. The analyses are based on the images they have uploaded on their fashion blogs. These images are considered narrations of the self and are read as text. This study is based on the reader’s perspective using Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author. Therefore, the intended meanings of the authors, in this case, the fashion bloggers, with their clothing are no longer considered. Instead, this thesis focuses on how the reader, in this case, I, perceive and interpret the clothing and the body.
This film is about the generation and degeneration of a person’s memories. Memories can be reincarnated again in various ways. In this film, memories are given a second life in the form of still pictures. The story takes place mainly in the mind of a woman, who gathers so much experiences throughout her life. In the end, she will get old and become forgetful, but will be able to preserve her memories by the pictures she has taken. Her time may pass and her human mind may weaken; but thanks to her photographs, her memories will stay.
It is stated in Baudrillard’s Theory of Hyperreality, “the moment modernity exploded upon us is the moment of liberation in every sphere; and the only thing we can do after liberation has been achieved is to simulate that liberation.” In this film, the almost endless production of memories has brought liberation to the person who owns these memories. It becomes a repetitive cycle, and somewhat senseless. As the person who owns the memories get old and eventually die, the endless cycle of repetition is put to an end. As a redeeming factor, it is not all put to an end. The real meaning of those memories still survives, as photographs; it’s essence simulated by those who see it.
ABSTRACT

This study examines the different yet intertwining factors that affect the value usage of television news broadcasting in the Philippines. Employing the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) of Coombs (1995), Functionalist theory of McQuail (2005), Political-Economic Media Theory, Agenda-Setting Theory, and incorporated the Filipino behavioral patterns of Virgilio Enriquez (1989). This study explores the manifestations of the accommodative and confrontative values in crisis news reporting which happened in the last five years (2005-2010). The primary concern is to identify and compare the accommodative and confrontative values in television news programs in crisis situations based on journalists’/ reporters’ practices, news officials’ practices, and audiences’ perception, as well as other factors that influence the manifestation of these values. To find out the usage and prevalence of these values in different types of crises, this study employed interviews, focus group discussions, and textual analysis of videos. The study concludes that the confrontative way of communication was practiced more often than the accommodative way. This took place while gathering and covering crisis news stories. Furthermore, the accommodative way of communication was used on a more personal level such as dealing with fellow reporters, sources and crew members.
In dreaming, the ideas being expressed are not based on the thoughts which we are aware of while we are in the waking state. Instead, it dwells on the repressed ideas that have long been buried within our subconscious. Dream is a bridge which allows us to see what lies within the subconscious through visual images and not words or concrete thoughts.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to understand how the postmodern aesthetic production called pastiche is used in the image production of Lady Gaga's music videos. The study concentrates on Gaga’s most prominent music videos, namely, Bad Romance, Telephone and Alejandro.

Textual analysis using deconstruction reveals that Lady Gaga borrows excessively from the pop culture image bank. Her visual imagery is a collage of various pop cultural references ranging from Madonna, Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol, Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubrick, etc. Gaga effectively synthesizes the works of her references to create her own “art”. As a form of artistic innovation, Lady Gaga engages in pastiche overdrive by pushing the works of her references to the limits or merely inverting them. With such display of excessive styles, images and themes, Lady Gaga’s music videos acquire their own meaning and undermine the “essence” of the song.

ABSTRACT

This thesis is a purely qualitative study which reflects the pervasiveness of visual media in our lives. Specifically, this study aimed to examine the visual representations of Former-President Corazon “Cory” Aquino and President Gloria “Gloria” Macapagal-Arroyo in visual media, both in newspapers and magazine. Guided by the semiotic theory, photographs of the presidents gathered from The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and Time magazine were visual analyzed. The Encoding/Decoding theory was used to find out how selected Filipinos perceived the images, colors, signs, symbols and gestures associated with Cory and Gloria. While the Feminist Political Theory was used as a lens in looking into the political practices of Cory and Gloria based on their perceived leadership style, characteristics and advocacies. The emergence of visual culture was explored thru the verification of the selected Filipinos’ perceived representations of Cory and Gloria vis-a-vis their visual media representations. Findings revealed that Cory was positively represented in the visual media while Gloria was both positively and negatively represented. Visual media representations showed not only the physical aspects of Cory and Gloria but also their expressions and characteristics. It was proven that visual media could elicit different interpretations from different spectators.
with the image constructs of society. Susan is turning thirty and the pressures of marriage
and career are both present with her persistent mother and her work at the office. She
It seems that the only obvious choices available to women in society are family or

Abstract

This thesis focused on how selected Filipinos perceive feminine beauty as well as its formation and the external and internal factors that influence it. Also, it focused on what feminine beauty is and the distinction of the perception of feminine beauty across gender.

Review of related literature revealed that mass media and advertising equate beauty to thinness. This ideal of female beauty has a negative impact on females resulting to eating disorders and disturbance in their appearances. Furthermore, women want to improve their appearances by purchasing beauty products or resort to cosmetic surgery. It was found out too that Western ideals of beauty propagate through local television and magazine advertisements. Thus, media influences women’s ideals of beauty. Also, most studies focused on certain products or campaigns when exploring about the females’ perception on beauty such as skin-whitener commercials and other TV advertisements. Moreover, most studies explored the females’ point of view when it comes to beauty, not exploring the perception across gender.

This study adapted Firmeza’s study framework (1995) and used Perception Model, Filipino Value System, Constructivism, Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, Persuasion theory, Reinforcement theory and Agenda Setting theory. Concepts from each of the theories were borrowed in order to come up with an integrated conceptual framework.

The researcher conducted a series of focus interviews and focus group discussions that primarily explored into how the perception of beauty was formed and the factors that influenced its formation. The focus group discussions and focus interviews gave an in-depth inquiry as to what factors contributed to the meaning of beauty among selected Filipinos. Both methods employed a purposeful sampling.

Findings of the study revealed that in forming perceptions of feminine beauty, a lot of factors are to be considered. External sources of information such as family, friends, partners, social groups, society & culture, work, advertisements and mass media were found out to be influential. Also, it was found out that individuals have their own standard of feminine beauty based on their upbringing and maturity. Moreover, the informants primarily associated feminine beauty with outer beauty or physical attractiveness because they shared that it is first seen by people. However, inner beauty was considered essential most especially in interacting with other people more so, in keeping relationships with others. Inner beauty was said to be longer lasting compared to outer beauty. Furthermore, there is a need for one to be beautiful for self fulfillment and for others’ acceptance. In addition, it was found out in this study that perceptions of feminine beauty vary across gender.

This study will be of great use for women who have distorted perceptions of beauty and low self esteem. It will also help the audience to be more critical of what mass media present as beautiful and consider themselves as beautiful too. In addition, this study will contribute to the learning of different fields such as mass communication, arts, psychology and anthropology.
