Comedy as Platform for Gay Empowerment: An Analysis of Vice Ganda’s Brand of Comedy as Presented in the Television Programs It’s Showtime and Gandang Gabi Vice'', Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

A horse turned host, the ''unkabogable'' Jose Marie Viceral or Vice Ganda’s distinct comedic brand on television provides a discourse on gay empowerment. The research studies how mediated gay humor empowers the bakla. Specifically, it analyzes how Vice Ganda’s brand of gay wit and humor in television shows ''It’s Showtime'' and ''Gandang Gabi Vice'' is used as a mechanism to champion the bakla.

In order to describe Vice Ganda’s brand of wit and humor as presented in ''It’s Showtime'' and ''Gandang Gabi Vice'', to relate gender and humor in the discursive production of gay identity vis-à-vis self-determination, and to examine the role Vice Ganda’s wit and humor plays in supporting the bakla and encouraging self-determination, I employ a qualitative study of textual analysis by viewing selected episodes of the comedian host’s segments concerning the bakla.

Garcia’s Philippine-based gay culture is adapted to localize Butler’s gender performativity. Since gender is a becoming rather than a being, I look into De Marinis’ semiotics of performance in examining Vice Ganda’s communicative manipulation on the bakla through Jackson’s technologies of subjective interpretivity. Furthermore, I utilize Jacob’s theoretical aspects of communication in operationalizing studies on humor, LGBTQ, and empowerment as an effective interpersonal tool of gay identity development.

==We Are Broad Ass==

The UP Broadcasting Association, Broad Ass, is a non-stock, non-profit academic organization and student creatives outfit based at the UP College of Mass Communication. It creates socially relevant content by utilizing the potential of online platforms; produces high quality broadcast texts and materials; and, mounts events that promote campaigns and advocacies. They are all managed to inspire and involve the youth in social action.

Since its founding in 1968, Broad Ass has joined the ranks of the more prominent organizations in the university, having produced illustrious names in the industry today such as Tessie Tomas, Loren Legarda, Maryo de los Reyes, Luchi Cruz-Valdes, Ogie Alcasid, Raz de la Torre, Mariz Umali, Chico Garcia, among others

==History==

Founded in 1968, the UP Broadcasting Association is the brainchild of Kitchie Benedicto and Maria Montelibano in the UP College of Mass Communication. During the tumultuous 70's, at the height of Martial Law, the Assers, as members of the organization are called, staged Dulaang Kapiterya, a series of plays fearlessly satirizing the political conditions of the times. They used the Mass Communication canteen as their theater.

The 80's ushered in the trend of concerts, parties, and fashion shows. Broad Ass was among the pioneers in the fusion of such concepts into one major event.
During the 90's, Broad Ass began producing music videos. It was also during this decade that the Assers hosted the eagerly-awaited dating games during the UP Fair.

In 2010, Broad Ass revamped its branding; and, shifted from staging performances to creating videos as a student production house. Aside from training its members in event production, graphic design, finance, and marketing, the organization also puts emphasis on inculcating members with skills aligned with audio and/or video content and production. They include proficiency in all stages of production, from conceptualization and scriptwriting, to color grading and video editing.
Today, Broad Ass continually lives up to the demands of competence and creativity; and, tightly embraces its tenets of passion, excellence, and glory.

In 2010, Broad Ass renewed its branding, and shifted from staging performances to creating videos as a student production house. Aside from training its members in event production, graphic design, finance and marketing, the organization also places emphasis in inculcating members with skills aligned with video production. These include proficiency in all stages of production, from conceptualization and script writing, to color grading and video editing.
Today, Broad Ass continually lives up to the demands of competence and creativity, and tightly embraces its tenets of passion, excellence and glory.
