ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

D Osom 2 is a cute, heartwarming story of young siblings Masi and Maya. It tells about Masi, whose childhood experience drastically changed his simple and hopeful perception of the world. He uses his vivid imagination as his coping mechanism to the longing and worry he feels brought by the uncertainty of where their parents are. Their parents went to a medical mission and cannot be found after. He shares this story to his younger sister Maya to comfort her from the same feeling he has towards their family’s circumstance.

Masi creates this superhero story where their parents are the lead superheroes fighting against the “Bad Mamaws” in the land which he named “Kaboomlandia.” He labelled the awesome tandem of their superhero parents as “D Osom 2.”

ABSTRACT

In a patron-client society influenced greatly by religion, people involved are either struggling or abiding with these forces governing them just to survive daily living. "Winner Winner" is the story of how the elite gains from the poverty of the majority. Framed by ideological criticism, it explores how Christianity is being used by the powerful in order to drive the powerless to depend more on them.

This production thesis, set in the Philippine Lenten season, ensues a day in a life of a loving mother who joins the popular game show, "Winner Winner," in the hope of redeeming her daughter’s corpse from the morgue.

ABSTRACT

Molina, K. S. (2011). Padayon, Unpublished Student Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

Padayon is about two friends facing different contradictions in the same societal context. Maris, whose father had died in the mountains, dropped out from school and has decided to join the New People’s Army. Her mother, being antagonistic about her decision, forces her to stay through psychological and emotional means. Pia, a student from a public state university, learns that her friend Maris was ambushed and is detained in prison. Her communication with Maris through letters pushes her internal conflict to choose between her personal interests or her need to serve the interest of others just like her friend, Maris, did.

Contradictions between two ideas or objects are necessary to cause motion, change, and development in the world. Mao Zedong states, “Every reason contradicts. True ideas emerge in the struggle against false ideas." Contradiction is necessary for change to happen. Padayon shows that it is in resolving these natural contradictions will one be able to break free from the conflict. And in resolving a contradiction, one will then face a bigger contradiction. The whole process of resolving these contradictions contributes to the bigger picture. Padayon suggests that the struggle does not end in the resolution on a personal level but that the struggle continues to the resolution of a bigger struggle – that which affects a societal change.
ABSTRACT

"Liyab" is a story of today’s youth and their roles in modern society. It is about the unheard voices of the marginalized. It shows how the struggle for equality and human rights is a battle against apathy. Finally, it illustrates how the individualistic nature of today’s society has dislocated, divided, and discriminated the marginalized.
"Liyab" explores these themes in a series of long takes, allowing the audience to observe the scenarios involving our four main characters.

These are:

- a student activist

- a rich Chinese girl bound by old traditions

- a photojournalist, and

- a closeted homosexual lover.

Their lives intersect in a “day in a life” narrative that tragically tests the strength of their beliefs. These situations expose the repressive state of today's society, which the characters – and their counterparts in reality – are challenged to overcome.

"Liyab" utilizes Noelle-Neumann’s Spiral of Silence and the Queer theory in order to explain the behavior of closeted homosexuals and how repression affects them. The film also heavily espouses on Egalitarian principles and feminism, particularly tackling a discourse on women empowerment through two female characters of similar beliefs differing only in method. Michel Foucault’s theory on Power Relations was also used to understand the continuing nature of rallies, while Neorealism became the film’s aesthetic for its overall style in portraying the visuals and in telling the story.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Molina, K. S.
